Some argue that his portrayal of Jewish characters in his novels, such as Fagin in "Oliver Twist," perpetuated negative stereotypes and contributed to antisemitism. Others argue that Dickens' portrayal of Fagin was a reflection of the prevailing attitudes of his time and that he also created sympathetic Jewish characters in his works. Ultimately, the question of whether Dickens was antisemitic is complex and open to interpretation. **
